Overview

Referral Factory can sit alongside your bank, fintech, lending, insurance or financial services systems. You can capture and attribute the referral first, continue the person into your normal application and KYC process, and tell Referral Factory when the account reaches the milestone that should qualify the referral.
For strategy, reward and promotion ideas, explore our banking and financial services referral program guide.
The basic journey looks like this:
Existing customer becomes a referrer → shares a Referral Link → lead details are captured → the lead continues into the normal onboarding journey → the business confirms a conversion milestone → the referral qualifies → the reward becomes Due.
Your qualifying milestone, reward and customer journey may be different.

1. Decide who should become a Referrer

Many financial services businesses start with existing customers because those customers already know the product and can make a trusted recommendation to friends or potential new customers.
For example, a bank could set the audience to past and current customers. It could invite those customers through its normal email, app or logged-in website journey, or let them join through the Branded Referrer Portal if self-sign-up is appropriate.

Choose the best way to promote your referral program

Financial services customers usually interact with the business in online banking, an app or another authenticated customer area. A Refer a Friend button can open an On-Click Popup inside that environment, allowing customers to access their Referral Link, see referrals and review rewards without leaving the experience. A Branded Referrer Portal is another option, either standalone or embedded where appropriate. Use email campaigns to invite existing customers, then use Referral Links for sharing.
The bank's CRM can receive the captured lead and send it into the existing application or onboarding workflow. When the application is approved or the account is funded, the CRM, API or an inbound webhook can record the relevant Goal in Referral Factory. Keep KYC and core banking controls in your existing systems, and use Referral Factory's fraud and self-referral controls alongside your existing checks.
You do not need to replace your existing customer authentication or core banking experience. The portal can be used as a standalone referral experience, or it can be embedded into a logged-in website, app, product or customer portal. Your existing system remains responsible for customer login and banking functionality.

4. Continue the application in your existing banking system

Referral Factory does not need to replace your account application, lending, insurance or onboarding system.
After the lead submits the Referral Link Page form, send them into the normal journey your business already uses. For example:
Referral Link Page → lead captured and attributed → bank account application → normal KYC and onboarding process.
The application may live on your website, in your app, in a CRM-assisted sales process or in another onboarding system. Referral Factory keeps the lead connected to the referrer while your existing systems handle the regulated or operational parts of the customer journey.

5. Decide what counts as a successful referral

A lead submitting the referral form is not automatically a successful financial services referral. Decide which business event should qualify the referral.
Possible milestones include:
There is no single correct milestone for every financial services business. Choose the event that represents meaningful value for your product and that your systems can verify consistently.
In this example, the journey is represented by three additional records under Goals. In Referral Factory, those records are labelled Custom goal:
1. Application Started — the referred person begins the normal application.
2. Account Approved — the application reaches the approval milestone.
3. Account Funded — the new account reaches the example final milestone.
In this example, the referrer and lead rewards trigger only when Account Funded is reached. That illustrates the difference between capturing a lead, tracking progress and reaching the final reward condition.
  • account approved;
  • account opened;
  • account funded;
  • first transaction completed;
  • loan approved; or
  • another business-defined conversion event.

6. Decide how Referral Factory will know when the milestone happens.

The milestone is the business action you want to track. These records are managed under Goals in Referral Factory.
The milestone and the method used to record it are separate decisions. First define the business event and the evidence that confirms it. Then choose how your systems will send or record that event in Referral Factory.
Depending on your systems, you may use:
The bank continues to run its normal application, KYC and onboarding process. Referral Factory maintains the referral relationship, and the chosen event method records the relevant goal when the person reaches the required milestone.
The current Goals area uses the Custom goal label for added tracking records.
If the product journey has more than one meaningful stage, track those stages as separate goals where that helps your team. For example:
Lead captured → application started → account approved → account funded.
For a simple referral program, one final qualification event may be enough. For a longer journey, intermediate goals can help your team understand where referred applicants are progressing or dropping out.
  • a CRM integration to map a CRM stage to a goal;
  • the API;
  • an inbound webhook;
  • an automation platform such as Zapier, Make or n8n; or
  • manual qualification by your team.

7. Set up the reward after the milestone

For example, both the referrer and the lead could have a manual fixed-value reward. Both rewards could be tied to the Account Funded goal, with automatic issuance turned off.
This is only an example. You can choose to reward the referrer, the lead or both, and you can use a different reward type or issuing method. Keep the reward explanation short in this guide and use the dedicated reward documentation for the available reward options.
Remember the difference between Due and Issued:
For financial services, keeping rewards manual until the required milestone has been checked can be useful during testing or where your team wants an approval step. See How do I set up rewards for my referral program? for reward setup guidance.
  • Due means the reward has been created because the qualifying condition was met, but it still needs to be issued according to your process.
  • Issued means the reward has been paid or delivered.

8. Test the complete journey before launching

Keep the campaign in Draft while you test the full path. Check that the referrer receives a unique link, the test lead is captured and attributed correctly, the lead is redirected into the expected application or onboarding flow, the three Goals are recorded as intended, Account Funded is the only trigger for the example rewards, and no reward is Issued automatically unless that is intentional.

Important things to consider for financial services

Financial services journeys often need more control than a simple refer-a-friend campaign. Before launching, decide how you will handle:
Referral Factory can help capture the referral relationship and the information used in your referral controls, but it does not remove the need for your own fraud, privacy, security, KYC or regulatory processes. See How do I prevent referral fraud? for the dedicated fraud guidance.
  • existing customers and applicants who may already be in your onboarding process;
  • duplicate referrals for the same person;
  • self-referrals;
  • rewards that should wait until a verified business milestone;
  • the length of time between lead capture and conversion; and
  • the type of information that is appropriate to collect on the Referral Link Page.

The finance example in one view

For example, a banking referral program can use this structure:
Existing customer → Branded Referrer Portal → unique Referral Link → Referral Link Page → normal bank application → Application Started → Account Approved → Account Funded → manual rewards become Due.
Use the same structure as a starting point, then change the audience, fields, application destination, milestones and reward rules to match your own financial product.
