This error occurs when a Lead in Salesforce has already been converted to a Contact (and sometimes an Account or Opportunity) before the referral sync tries to reference it. Once a Lead is converted, Salesforce blocks API actions on the original Lead record.

How to fix it

  • Search for the user by email in Salesforce.
  • Check whether the Lead record has been converted to a Contact.
  • If it has, the original Lead can no longer be updated via the API.

How to prevent it

  • Ensure Leads are not converted before the referral process completes.
  • If your sales team regularly converts Leads quickly, consider configuring Referral Factory to create Contacts instead of Leads in your integration settings.
