Tesla<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, \u2018The Technoking of Tesla\u2019 aka <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\">@elonmusk<\/a> in the referral musk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They gave away money at PayPal\u2026why not Tesla too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tesla gave away $1000 per successful referral, access to exclusive events, and a \u201cfounder series\u201d Model X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EzYTw94VgAUx0f6.png\" alt=\"Tesla - successful referral programs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what Tesla did:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; They gave $1000 to Tesla owners whose referrals resulted in the purchase of a Model S.<br>\n&#8211; The friend would also get $1000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, Tesla fans aren\u2019t just any fans \u2014 they\u2019re raving fans who are obsessed with Tesla\u2019s every move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Tesla incentivized them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Get 5 referrals and you\u2019ll get an invite to the Gigafactory grand opening party.<br>\n&#8211; Get 10 referrals and you\u2019ll get the right to purchase a special \u201cfounder series\u201d Model X<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DAMN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-dropbox\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_DropBox\"><\/span>3. DropBox<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DropBox followed in the footsteps of PayPal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also created a 2-sided referral program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how it went:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; You sign-up and receive free storage in the cloud.<br>&#8211; Refer a friend and you get 500MB of free storage.<br>&#8211; Your friend gets 500MB of free storage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EzYT_drVcAI1_pk.jpg\" alt=\"Drop box -  successful referral programs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Do this until you reach 16 GB in free storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key was both parties winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results speak for themselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; 100k Users in Sept 2008 -&gt; 4m users by Dec 2009<br>&#8211; 3900% growth in 15 months<br>&#8211; 2x its user base every 3 months for 15 months<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<embed src=\"https:\/\/referral-factory.com\/embed-generate-campaign\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400px\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-airbnb\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Airbnb\"><\/span>4. Airbnb<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting paid to travel? Imagine that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airbnb made it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They launched V 1.0 of their referral program in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How it worked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Refer a friend, and you\u2019ll receive $25 when they take a trip<br>\n&#8211; Refer a friend, and you\u2019ll receive $75 when they rent out their place<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EzYUClAVcAIy3eI.png\" alt=\"AirBnb - successful referral programs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After seeing the success, they scratched V 1.0 and launched V 2.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Version 2.0 focused on distribution and driving awareness of its referral program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They added things like:<br>\n&#8211; Direct invites via email<br>\n&#8211; Importing contacts<br>\n&#8211; Header to their site<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The referral incentives remained the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the results are mad: Referrals drove 900% year-on-year growth for 1st-time bookings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-amazon-prime\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Amazon_Prime\"><\/span>5.  Amazon Prime<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon Prime had an epic referral program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A survey showed that Prime Members:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Spent 2x as much as non-Prime members<br>\n&#8211; They also order more frequently than non-prime members<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EzYUHieVIAQNdZ5.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Prime -  successful referral programs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer a friend, and when they make a purchase over $5, you\u2019ll get $5 to spend on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s genius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You get $ that you\u2019ll eventually spend using Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know that Espresso Floating Side Table you\u2019ve been eyeing for weeks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer enough friends, and it&#8217;s all yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IMO: It could\u2019ve been better if it was 2-sided.
